A New Order

So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” (John 20:19 NAS95)

Jesus could speak no more poignant words: “Peace be with you.” The disciples locked behind walls, cowering, wondering even though they knew Jesus’ tomb lay empty.  Then the appearance, Jesus quite literally popped into their space, the space of their heart and the room they occupied and spoke life: “Peace be with you.” The resurrected One had taken on our sin, not just as payment for us, but as One whom sin did not corrupt. He transformed sin into life for those who hear His voice and removed that which obstructed our way to God. Our very hearts full of fear, afraid of God, now enjoying the invitation of peace, reconciliation with the Father who has always loved. We had misperceived. The Lord who died and rose again loves, invites, and desires relationship with us. Peace be with you!

John indicates the resurrection of Jesus occurred on the first day of the week coloring the event with renewal and re-creation. Yes, “Peace be with you,” for new creation has begun with resurrection as a forecast of God’s desires coming to fulfillment. The God who exists loves, provides, and saves. Rebirth and renewal flow from Jesus’ resurrection creating a people responsive to God with us, who hear His voice and obey. A new order has commenced. Jesus, with these words, invites us to enter boldly to commune, pray and engage with God, the lover of our soul. Peace be with you! His touch transforms. May His reign on earth expand with this amazing news!

For Reflection:

  1. What image or picture of God and His character do you carry in your soul? What feelings arise when you consider Him as you perceive?

  1. What is your experience of peace with God like? What helps you cultivate a sense of peace in your life with God?
