But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God,…” (Jude 1:20–21 NAS95)
My time with God this morning reminded me of the Spirit remaining upon Jesus at His baptism (Jn. 1:33). The verse cited above, however, flows from the pen of Jesus’ half brother, Jude, who now has matured in his experience of the Spirit. I often wonder how growing up around Jesus shaped His brothers. Obviously, the memory Jude carried of Jesus, both pre- and post-resurrection, marked him deeply. I wonder if it informed him to such a degree that he connects praying in the Holy Spirit with remaining in the love of God? From what Jude writes, praying in the Spirit carried with it the aura of God’s love, which built the community in faith.
Jude seems to imply that quiet communion with God inspires and inclines one to remain in His love. I think about how Jude experienced Jesus. What a powerful picture that must have been! Jesus’ communion with God and the fruit from it even motivated His disciples to ask Him to teach them to pray (Lk. 11:1). It tasted so good! Jude echoes the same idea in order to address the issues in the community he is writing. Live in God’s presence and His love will fill the community — His Spirit will shine through!
For Reflection:
“Let all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; and let those who love Your salvation say continually, “Let God be magnified.”” (Psalms 70:4 NAS95)
- How has prayer helped you remain in God’s love? What helps you recognize the presence of the Spirit’s work in your life?
- Recall an instance where you experienced the deep love of God’s presence? What was happening?
