Sounds Familiar

When he puts forth all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. (John 10:4 NAS95)

Listen. His voice calls, woos, and leads. We can recognize it and become familiar with it. Jesus takes the truth of sheep, their nature as frail, fragile, fearful and defenseless, and applies it to me — and to us. I don’t like admitting these things, but when I peer into my own heart, I see the same fragility and fear that sheep so transparently reveal. Yet Jesus’ voice, its very character, soothes the heart, allays the fears, and inspires confidence to follow. The sheep know He is for them. They find comfort, safety and serenity when they hear His voice, which by its soothing and gentle quietness draws them more deeply into His love. Listen. He speaks.

Sometimes the bustle of life keeps me from hearing, but slowing, stilling, and letting quiet settle in allows me to recognize the voice of the One who leads me. Prayer includes listening, not just speaking. When I listen, I recognize His voice. It grows more familiar as time passes. Fear flees and peace ensues. While He may straighten my way, He never condemns, and I discover my spirit lifted no matter what He shares with me. I find by listening, I’m led to wholeness and all that comes my way becomes blessing. I hear His voice and I follow because I know His love. His voice is love. Does that sound familiar?

For Reflection:

“O continue Your lovingkindness to those who know You, and Your righteousness to the upright in heart.” (Psalms 36:10 NAS95)

  1. How would you describe the character and quality of Jesus’ voice in your experience?

  1. When you still your soul and allow the quiet to enter what do you hear from Jesus?
