“because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen” (Romans 1:19-20 NAS95)
God speaks much to me through creation. He has done so even when I didn’t know Him personally through Jesus. I remember, with amazement, contemplating me moving my finger, and that I had power to do that — instantaneously. I know people might laugh at that, but this musing occurred to me around 6 years of age.
The precision with which God has made the human astounds me. Most of us go through 60 plus years of life before we might need a spare part. Also I never need oil for my joints. I can’t say the same about my car. The natural tendency the body has toward healing blows my mind. Even my body’s propensity to maintain itself in a healthy state amazes me. God shows me the level of His thought, the detail He attends to in these things. And it boggles me!
God often draws my attention to the interconnectedness of nature. I need the oxygen the trees put off, and they need the carbon dioxide I provide through simply breathing. We might not like bacteria, but they have purposes helpful for us and nature. I mean, who thinks this stuff up? God of course!
He teaches me so much through this. I remember simply thinking about variety: dogs, cats, plants, trees, you name it. God loves and lauds difference. What about me? Often, not so much. Simply pondering Him in this way thrusts me into examining my petty prejudices.
As I contemplate creation, I see a God who loves, nurtures, and shows off all this stuff to us, and it captivates my curiosity. He draws me into wonder about Himself. He has made Himself known within me and to me through creation. The supernatural hidden in the ordinary. God ever present, making Himself known. And if we respond to this drawing, He’ll introduce us to Jesus!
I think He did that with me. He drew me to Himself through the amazing things in creation, then through some amazing circumstances and people (also a part of creation). In a way, I discovered the Supernatural in the ordinary, even though I know He used that avenue to draw me to Himself. I love that miracle!
For Reflection:
“Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders which You have done, and Your thoughts toward us; there is none to compare with You. If I would declare and speak of them, they would be too numerous to count.” (Psalm 40:5 NAS95)
- How has God used the ordinary to reveal aspects of Himself to you?
- How often do you look for God’s activity or ways in the ordinary?
