It is written in the prophets, ‘AND THEY SHALL ALL BE TAUGHT OF GOD.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me. (John 6:45 NAS95)
Jesus makes assumptions that I find astounding. I only wish my heart attended to the Father as assuredly He trusts His Father speaks to us. Rich with Scripture permeating His soul and memory, Jesus shares with those of His day that God actively woos all people. Somehow their heart is quickened to seek. Those that listen and perceive these overtures come to Jesus whose presence resonates with the character of the One they hear.
Jesus presumes His Father’s work in all that He did in ministry. He knew God whispered wonderings into the hearts of people to whom He spoke. The only question Jesus had concerned whether the people attended and listened to these overtures. Those that did came to Him. God continuously speaks. Am I listening like Jesus so I can join Him as He touches those around me? The season of Advent accents and amplifies the whispered wooing of the Father that draws people to Christ. My desire is to make the same assumption Jesus did and attend to the Father so I can enter into conversation with those He is drawing to Himself.
For Reflection:
“As for me, You uphold me in my integrity, and You set me in Your presence forever.” (Psalms 41:12 NAS95)
- Recall a conversation you had that resulted in someone becoming a follower of Christ? How did you experience God?
- What cues cause you to detect when God is drawing someone to Himself? What can you do to cultivate attentiveness to God’s work in not-yet believers?
